Women’s Health Physiotherapy is the therapeutic treatment of all disorders affecting the pelvis and pelvic floor for women of all stages of life

Women’s Health Physio is the therapeutic treatment of all disorders affecting the pelvis and pelvic floor for women of all stages of life. This includes antenatal, postnatal and gynaecological problems. Many of these can be prevented and most conditions are treatable regardless of age.

Sophie is our women’s health specialist physiotherapist who has a wealth of experience in the treatment of pregnancy-related musculoskeletal pain and postnatal and menopausal gynaecological problems. She has worked in the NHS for a London teaching hospital for 9 years and alongside this in the private sector.

Sophie is a fully certified APPI Pilates instructor and finds Pilates integral to the rehabilitation of pelvic floor and abdominal weakness. Sophie is acupuncture trained through ALIED and uses acupuncture in the treatment of joint pain, muscle tension and bladder urgency.

Sophie is a member of the association for Pelvic Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapy (POGP) and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). She is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

A woman’s body undergoes an extraordinary change during pregnancy. Hormones are released to make your ligaments and muscles more elastic. This allows your body to accommodate for the growing baby and prepares for childbirth. As a result your joints are less supported and this can lead to aches and pains in the back and pelvis.

Keeping fit throughout pregnancy is good for you and your baby. It will strengthen your joints and prevent those aches and pains.

Sophie can help you with:

  • Pregnancy pain – in the back, pelvic girdle, ribs or perineum. Also management of carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Pelvic floor weakness
  • Bladder and bowel problems
  • Preparation for labour (breathing exercises, massage and relaxation)
  • Pregnancy Pilates

The Mummy MOT:

It’s important after childbirth to encourage the muscles of the pelvic floor and abdomen to strengthen once again, to realign the back and generally get back in shape.

The Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal assessment recommended for all women following delivery – whether 6 weeks or many years after. Sophie is a Mummy MOT practitioner and provides a comprehensive postnatal examination and physiotherapy treatment plan looking at posture, breathing, tummy gap and pelvic floor strength.

A bespoke postnatal recovery programme will be devised especially for you, your lifestyle and fitness goals.

The Mummy MOT includes:

  • Posture analysis
  • Full back and pelvis assessment
  • Abdominal muscle assessment, including check for muscle separation using real-time ultrasound
  • Pelvic floor muscle assessment and re-training
  • Postnatal Pilates exercises to aid safe return to exercise

Women’s Health Physio can help you at any stage of your life, particularly with sensitive issues such as vaginal or bladder problems. The menopause is another stage in life that can bring benefits as well as challenges.
