Sports massage

Sports massage is a specialist deep tissue massage that aims to relieve exercise related aches and pain within muscle and soft tissues. It can be very useful before or after exercise to speed recovery time and enhance performance of muscles.

Our therapists at Complete Physio are highly trained in the application of soft tissue techniques to stimulate or relax muscles.

We give you the opportunity to discuss your specific aims and objectives of the massage with the therapist before treatment (such as specific muscles groups to treat or details about sports or events you might be preparing for).

Also, if you have suffered a particular injury, sports massage is an excellent technique to integrate into your treatment and rehabilitation programme.

Benefits of Sports Massage Therapy:

  • Releases excess muscle tension
  • Speeds up recovery after intensive workout or injury
  • Improves muscle performance and body posture
  • Helps in early recognition of potential problems preventing injury
  • Increases range of motion in joints and muscle flexibility
  • Helps to offer relief from sciatica, back pain and muscle aches
  • Brings about general mental and physical relaxation and higher levels of energy
  • Stimulates mental alertness, brighter thinking and positive attitude

Other types of massage

REMEDIAL MASSAGE

Deep massage performed by skilled hands to create the conditions for the body’s return to optimal health after injury. Remedial massage is used to treat strains, sprains, broken bones, bruising and any injury where the skin is intact. Remedial or deep tissue massage removes blockages, damaged cells, scar tissue and adhesions left after injury speeding up recovery and encouraging more complete healing. This type of massage is also used for conditions created by lifestyle, for example, repetitive strain injury and back pain.

SWEDISH MASSAGE

Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fibre) and vibration/shaking.

Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain, joint stiffness, and improving function in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, over a period of eight weeks.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

Designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue or fascia. This type of massage focuses on the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles. Deep tissue massage is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity (such as athletes) and patients who have sustained physical injury.

PREGNANCY MASSAGE

Massage therapy specifically tailored for the expectant mother's needs. It is also called pre-natal massage. Pregnancy massage has been found to reduce stress, decrease swelling in the arms and legs and relieve aches and pains in muscles and joints. Massage therapy has been found to reduce anxiety and depression.
