Please note PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections are only available at Swiss Cottage. clinic and Chelsea.
Fast access to pain relief
We recognise the difficulties and the unnecessarily complicated journey patients are often asked to take in order to access pain relieving injections. We also recognise that fast access to pain relief can shorten treatment times and quickly help people back onto the path for recovery.
Complete Physio have developed a unique service directly tailored around the wants and needs of our patients. A one-stop shop, fast, efficient and safe service for patients to obtain pain relieving injections for a broad range of musculoskeletal conditions.
Complete Physio has a specialised team of clinicians who have undertaken extensive training to provide this service. Our clinical specialists have trained as musculoskeletal sonographers (the clinical use of diagnostic ultrasound). They have also completed extensive training to be qualified to prescribe mediations independently which means we do not require a referral from your GP.
This allows for our unique one-stop shop ultrasound guided injection service, whereby patients are able to book to attend a single consultation and received a physical assessment, diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound guided injection all in the same visit. This is a highly specialist and innovative service that has been specifically designed to improve patient’s easy access to pain relieving injections while simplifying patient’s journey and maintaining a first class level of care.
What is an ultrasound guided injection?
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves which are transmitted into the body’s tissues using a handheld probe. The returning waves are then computed to create an image of the anatomy within the body. Ultrasound is often used diagnostically to aid accurate assessment prior to the injection.
When performing an injection the ultrasound waves rebound from the needle as it progresses into the tissues of the body allowing clear visualisation of the needle tip and therefore accurate guidance of the injection to the target site.
An ultrasound guided injection can be corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid or PRP (platelet rich plasma). Ultrasound guidance also allows for a range of highly specialised procedures such as joint aspiration (draining swelling from a joint), barbotage (aspirating calcium deposits from within a tendon) and hydrodistension (stretching ligaments and joint capsule to improve movement).
What can ultrasound guided injections be used for?
Ultrasound guided injections are typically used for
Frozen shoulder
Tennis elbow
Golfer’s elbow
Greater trochanteric pain syndrome
Osteoarthritis of the knee
Osteoarthritis of the hip
Morton’s neuroma
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Plantar fasciitis
Shoulder impingement
Shoulder bursitis
Acromioclavicular joint pain
“Complete Physio run a fantastic one-stop shop clinic. I was able to book a same day appointment, complete my medical screening and consent form online and was seen for a single appointment assessment scan and ultrasound guided injection. Perfect for patients wanting quick access to pain relieving injections. Fantastic service.”
What is the benefit of an ultrasound guided injection?
There is a significant body of research which demonstrates that ultrasound guided injections give better levels of pain relief, of longer last effects and improve the functionality compared with injection that are done without ultrasound guidance (blind or surface marked injections). There is also evidence that it reduces the risk of trauma or misplacement of the needle and injection substance, therefore improving the safety of the injection whilst reducing the risks of adverse events associated with injection therapy.
Ultrasound guided injections are often used to help reduce pain so that a patient can engage with their physiotherapy treatment and rehabilitation. Many patients have difficulty performing the exercise program they have been asked to carry out due to high levels of pain and, therefore, an injection is very much part of a treatment package.
The ultrasound guided injection will be delivered by one of our highly trained clinicians, who will assess you, scan you and perform an ultrasound guided injection if agreed that this is the best and most appropriate treatment. Most injection procedures only require a single injection, however, there are situations where a patient may require more than one injection, e.g., a frozen shoulder may require two to three injections each around six to eight weeks apart. Another example is PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections, which are typically given as a program of three treatments, each treatment being one week apart.
We have created a patient information page and also an online medical screening and consent form, with associated patient information leaflets, which outline potential risks and side effects associated with the specific injection that you are booking in for.
Injections are generally regarded as very safe. However, please see the link to our page outlining potential risks and side effects associated with these procedures.
The clinician performing your injection will advise you of any specific advice and management of your condition following the injection. Typically, they may advise you of relative rest for a specific period after the injection, usually only a maximum of a couple of days. However, this will be discussed in more detail at your appointment.
Yes. Ultrasound guided injections are used to reduce pain. This is most often to allow patients to increase their ability to exercise and self manage their condition e.g. frozen shoulder or arthritic knee. Some injections are very effective as a stand-alone treatment e.g. trigger finger. Hyaluronic acid and PRP are typically used as adjuncts to an exercise and rehabilitation program.
Ultrasound guidance allows the injection to be targeted within the tissues therefore minimising any discomfort both during and after the procedure.
An ultrasound guided injection consultation and treatment typically lasts around 20-30mins. The amount of time spent assessing and scanning is dependent upon the condition.
Our clinicians do not perform ultrasound of any areas around the lumbar spine or neck.
