What Conditions Can Be Treated?

Pain on the outside of the knee caused by:

Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome (ITBFS / Runner’s Knee)

Iliotibial band (ITB) friction syndrome is a common overuse knee condition causing a sharp, burning, or aching pain on the outside of the knee.

It is most common in runners, cyclists, and athletes, especially during repetitive knee bending activities such as downhill running or stairs.

You must have a confirmed diagnosis in order to have this treatment – please contact us if you need to discuss this, or to book an assessment prior to race day.

Why Choose an Ultrasound-Guided Injection?

Ultrasound Guided Knee Injection

Ultrasound-guided injections are considered best practice for sports injury injections because they:

  • Improve accuracy and safety
  • Target the exact source of pain
  • Maximise effectiveness of treatment

For runners, this can mean rapid pain relief and improved ability to complete the marathon.

Getting to the London Marathon Start Line

Our clinic is conveniently located for easy access to the start at Blackheath/Greenwich:

  • Take the southbound Northern Line from Angel to London Bridge
  • From London Bridge, take an overground train to Blackheath station

This simple route allows you to arrive at the start line with time to prepare.

Alternative Option – Steroid Injections Before Race Day

We also offer steroid injections for knee pain in runners in the weeks leading up to the marathon.

  • Recommended timing: 1-2 weeks minimum before race day
  • Allows symptoms to settle and treatment to take full effect

Important: Steroid injections cannot be performed on race day, as they require several days/weeks to work effectively. Effectiveness and timeframes can vary person to person.
